Commercial PLB vs DIY

An honest comparison between the Aegis-Beacon and commercial personal locator beacons: cost, reliability, coverage, and the decision framework.

Commercial PLB vs DIY

The honest question every potential builder asks: why build this when a commercial Personal Locator Beacon (PLB) exists? The answer is a real trade, not a slogan.

The comparison

AspectCommercial PLBAegis-Beacon
Cost$200 - $500 plus subscription (for messenger devices)$25 - $30 in parts
CoverageSatellite, worldwideLine of sight, 433 MHz
Emergency signalCOSPAS-SARSAT, professional rescue linkAny listener in the band
BatteryYears (device lifetime), non-replaceableHours to days, user-replaceable
RegistrationRequired by law in many countriesNone (band rules apply)
RepairNot repairableFully repairable
Learning valueNoneThe entire point

The honest recommendation

Buy a commercial PLB if you can afford it and travel in true wilderness. The satellite link is the only technology that reliably reaches professional rescue from anywhere. The beacon is not a replacement for that capability.

Build the beacon because: you want a field-repairable device, a learning project, a backup unit, a multi-unit network for a group, or a device whose operation you fully understand. It is a legitimate safety layer, not a substitute for a PLB.

The layer model

The honest safety stack:

  1. A commercial PLB or satellite messenger (primary, if affordable)
  2. The Aegis-Beacon (backup and group layer)
  3. The basics: plan, skills, signaling (see Hiking Safety)

Each layer covers the others’ failure modes: the PLB covers the beacon’s range limit, the beacon covers the PLB’s dead battery and closed ecosystem.
